Phase 1 involved repair and alteration works to the 200 year old Category A listed cathedral building, including installation of new underfloor heating, chandeliers and specialist lighting, stained glass and gold leaf restoration works, stone conservation and formation of a new Cloister extension and Italian garden.

Incorporated within the contract is works by artists Peter Howson, Jack Sloan and Tim Pomeroy.

Phase 2 works included the completion of Cloister structure and fit out to form a museum and exhibition space, visitors café, toilet facilities and upgrading of adjoining Presbytery building and car park. Funding assistance has been provided by Historic Scotland Historic Environment Grant scheme, VAT recovery through Listed Places of Worship scheme and Heritage Lottery Funding.

Works originally started on site in September 2009 with main contractor Hunter & Clark, however following their demise in June 2010 the works were re-tendered and restarted in July 2010 as 52 separate trade contracts managed by the Archdiocese of Glasgow, completed April 2011.
